At Charlotte Plastic Surgery, one of our most requested services is for a “mommy makeover”—a physical transformation for moms who wish to change something about their breasts or their body. It’s important to make a couple of notes about mommy makeovers. First, it’s not a one-size-fits-all proposition. While there are certainly some procedures that can help you achieve the look you’re after, what’s right for you may not be what’s right for the next mom. Second, it’s critical to pursue breast and body surgery only with the guidance of board-certified plastic surgeons and expert medical providers, who can help you determine which procedures are right for you.
There are a couple of ways in which Charlotte women can speak with a mommy makeover surgeon about the options available. First, you are invited to join us at the Beach Beauty Open House on March 22, from 6 PM until 8 PM. Six of our highly-skilled physicians will be available at the Randolph Road/Uptown location, and it will be a great opportunity to chat with us in a fun and relaxed setting.
Second, you are invited to schedule a consultation at Charlotte Plastic Surgery, where we provide these one-on-one consultations regarding breast and body surgeries of all kinds. Just give us a call or schedule a consultation here to learn more.
As you consider your next step, we’ll provide some general guidelines about some of the procedures we provide.
All About the Mommy Makeover Surgery
What is a mommy makeover?
Let’s start with the basics: What is a mommy makeover? Again, there’s no set definition, but in most cases, it involves some combination of breast augmentation and an abdominal procedure. Essentially, though, anything that helps mommies feel rejuvenated fits the bill.
Why seek a mommy makeover?
As for why this is such a popular request, there are a number of factors to consider, all of which can contribute to moms feeling as though they’re simply not at their best. These factors might include genetics, sun exposure, lifestyle, weight loss, weight gain, and childbearing. The point is simply that moms want to look and feel different, for whatever combination of reasons—and a mommy makeover helps them do it. Charlotte Plastic Surgery patients always tell us,
“The only regret I have is I wish I would have done it sooner!”

What are the options for breast enhancement?
As for specific options for breast enhancement, there are a few procedures for moms to consider.
- For those who have lost volume, breast implants make the most sense.
- For those who’ve had nipple descent, along with lost volume, a combination of breast augmentation and a breast lift is advisable.
- And, for those who have adequate breast volume but are concerned about nipple descent, a breast lift alone can do the trick.
What are the options available for breast implants?
For those women who are looking for fuller breasts, your surgeon will most likely recommend augmentation—that is, implants. There are two main types of breast implants to consider—silicone and saline. These two options vary in terms of their profile, gel cohesiveness, texture, and more; speak with your breast augmentation surgeon to learn more about these different choices.
What about the tummy?
Mommy makeover surgery is not just about breasts. Many moms are concerned about their tummies, too. Pregnancy causes the skin and muscles to stretch in order to accommodate the growing baby, and the long-term effects can sometimes be unwanted—including a small “paunch” that’s hard to get rid of with just diet and exercise.
What are the options available for the tummy?
The primary procedure for women looking for a flatter tummy is the “tummy tuck,” or abdominoplasty. This removes excess skin, tightens those muscle coverings, and repositions the stomach muscles themselves. See real Charlotte Plastic Surgery patients before and after photos for tummy surgeries, here.
Who is a good candidate for the “mommy makeover” procedure?
Putting it all together—breast enhancement along with a tummy procedure—can help women get that rejuvenation they seek. It’s important to note, however, that some moms are better candidates than others. The best mommy makeover candidates are:
- Highly motivated
- Consistent in their exercise
- Healthy in the way they eat
- No longer looking to lose weight (they are at their goal weight)
- Simply want to look like they feel, and to fit into their older clothing
It is safe to have both procedures (breasts and abdomen) at the same time, but only under the right conditions. That means healthy patients, good nutrition, and plenty of assistance at home. Charlotte Plastic Surgery will consult with you on whether you’re in a good, safe place to have a mommy makeover; for us, patient safety is always the top priority. We only perform mommy makeovers under the proper conditions.
What’s the recovery time for a mommy makeover surgery?
Many patients are understandably concerned that they will be in intense pain or experience a lengthy recovery time. Our surgeons provide Exparel, a local anesthetic, to provide pain control; it usually lasts about three days. Once it wears off, a little bit of discomfort can be expected, but nothing that’s unmanageable.
As for the recovery time, we generally recommend two weeks off work—and having some help at home is highly recommended. With regard to wearing a bra, your surgeon can make some recommendations about what’s best; you may also be advised to wear an abdominal binder and compression garments during the recovery. Again, your surgeon can tell you more.
