If you booked your first CoolSculpting® appointment, you might have questions about “how to prepare for CoolSculpting®.” CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure that requires minimal preparation. However, we do have guidelines to help you make the most of this powerful fat loss treatment.
To start, it helps to understand a few basic principles. CoolSculpting® works through Cryolipolysis, using cold temperatures to freeze and permanently destroy unwanted fat cells. In the weeks and months following treatment, the body releases the destroyed fat cells.
Some wonder whether CoolSculpting® is too good to be true. The treatment was cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2012 and grew more and more popular as mainstream awareness grew.
CoolSculpting® reduces fat in targeted areas; possibilities include:
- The upper and lower abdomen
- The waistline, love handles, or flanks
- The inner and outer thighs
- The arms, especially the upper arm
- Around the chin area to reduce a double chin
- The back and bra fat area
- The hips, buttocks, and underneath the buttocks
Since it is noninvasive, it is appropriate for many people. However, some medications and health issues contraindicate CoolSculpting®. Be sure to talk with your provider. Generally, a good candidate for CoolSculpting® is someone who is a nonsmoker in good general health and who is close to your ideal weight.
Preparing in the Days and Weeks Leading Up to Your Coolsculpting® Treatment
Try following these guidelines in the days and weeks prior to your procedure to increase the likelihood of effective treatment and minimize the risk of side effects. Plan to spend a few hours, so you are not stressed out if there are any delays. While the procedure typically takes 35 minutes, that doesn’t include prep work and waiting. Ask your provider how much time to plan on spending.
Ideally, book your appointment for a day when you can take it easy the following day. Although you will not experience the downtime associated with surgery or liposuction, you may feel some discomfort.
Don’t book your session for the morning after a party or night out. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your treatment. If you smoke, consider quitting even temporarily since it may slow your healing process.
Pre-hydrate in the week or days leading up to your procedure and the weeks afterward. Being generally well hydrated makes it easier for your body to release the fat through the lymphatic system.
If possible, cut down or ideally avoid medications that thin the blood like aspirin before the procedure to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling. If you must take blood thinners for medical reasons, please discuss this with your provider for more specific personalized guidance. Also, be aware of supplements like fish oil, ginger, and turmeric that also thin the blood.
On the day of your treatment, eat a light meal so you will feel comfortable but not stuffed. However, we recommend pre-hydrating so you won’t need to go to the bathroom during the procedure. This will just be more comfortable.
Limit caffeine and avoid it for a couple of hours before the procedure.
Also, consider limiting sun exposure and not sunbathing. This is mainly because the sun may increase skin sensitivity.
What to Bring to Your CoolSculpting® Appointment
Bring loose-fitting, comfortable clothes to change into, including a new set of undergarments. Loose sweat pants and a tee-shirt are ideal.
We highly recommend you bring something to do. Many prefer to bring a tablet, book, or phone to stream Netflix, listen to a podcast or read during their treatment. Download a couple of episodes to know you have quality entertainment ready.
During Your Treatment
Change into the provided robe or disposable clothing if your technician provides them. You may keep your undergarments on but be aware they may get gel on them or even get stained.
Before the actual CoolSculpting® treatment begins, your provider may photograph the areas and mark them with a pen.
Next, your provider will prep the skin and place a gel pad over the treatment zone. Next, they strategically place applicators. During the first few minutes, you may experience slight discomfort. Some describe it as a cooling sensation or tugging sensation. Some experience tingling or numbness.
After the CoolSculpting® session, your provider will apply a compression band for your comfort and to support healing.
Each CoolSculpting® treatment lasts around 35 to 45 minutes. Some people may need two sessions to see the results they want.
In the Days and Weeks Following CoolSculpting®
Average results range from 20 to 80 percent fat reduction following a single cryolipolysis procedure in treated areas. Since the results unfold over a few weeks or months, we recommend waiting three months before receiving a second session.
Common temporary side effects for a few days may include swelling, bruising, and sensitivity. Your provider will discuss the rare, more serious side effects. Remember that the risk for side effects increases with certain lifestyle habits, medications, and health conditions. Be sure to keep your provider informed so they can be prepared.
Schedule a Consultation
Your journey to a leaner-looking physique through CoolSculpting® begins with a consultation. During that appointment, your provider will assess whether you are a good candidate or whether another treatment may be a better fit.
Since an informed patient is empowered, your provider may show you before, and after images so you have a clear idea of what results people typically see.
