Our Year in Review

Reflecting back on 2015, there were a number of exciting highlights and advancements in the realm of plastic surgery and for our practice. In April, the FDA approved Kybella, the first ever injection designed to dissolve fat in the submental area and eliminate the “double chin” effect. Final results can be seen in six weeks, and the removed fat is permanently eliminated. Charlotte Plastic Surgery’s Dr. Stephan Finical was one of the first physicians in the country to receive training in this new and innovative treatment. Since his training, Dr. Finical has traveled nationwide to teach other doctors and nurses on the proper use and injection methods of Kybella.

In the spring, Charlotte Plastic Surgery started offering Coolsculpting services at its Ballantyne location. Coolsculpting Charlotte has skyrocketed in popularity as a non-invasive way to freeze and eliminate unwanted fat from the legs, belly, arms and chin. Since Coolsculpting requires no anesthetic and there is no downtime needed to recover, patients can be treated and drive themselves back to work!  We’ve found our patients have had great results using CoolSculpting to tone when diet and exercise just aren’t providing the desired impact.

Another trend we see in our practice is the emergence of a younger patient demographic.  Whereas older patients view cosmetic treatments as an earned reward, younger patients are discovering the benefits of using cosmetic procedures as a means for preventative maintenance. Botox, as well as fillers such as Juvederm and Voluma, are the mainstays of a regular anti-aging program for our younger patients.

In the area of skincare, we saw the introduction of a brand new category of sunscreen this year.  Skinmedica released Total Defense + Repair, a “super sunscreen” that protects against infrared energy. In the past, doctors have instructed patients to protect against UVA and UVB sunlight.  However, these ultraviolet energies account for only 7% of the sun’s energy that reaches Earth. Infrared energy accounts for over 50%, and with Total Defense + Repair, now we can protect ourselves from a much greater spectrum of the sun’s harmful rays.
