What is tummy tuck surgery?

A tummy tuck operation, also called abdominoplasty, eliminates excess skin and fat and, generally, restores weakened or split muscles resulting in an abdominal profile which is smoother and firmer.

A flatter and well-toned tummy is something a lot people aim for through exercise and weight loss. However, sometimes these methods are not successful in obtaining a flat, smoother tummy. Even people who have normal body fat percentage may have a stomach that protrudes or is sagging and loose.

What a tummy tuck operation does not do

A tummy tuck isn’t a replacement for weight loss or a proper exercise regimen. Even though the outcomes of a tummy tuck are irreversible, the positive result could be significantly diminished by significant changes in your weight. Because of this, people that are planning to lose a substantial amount of weight or women who are contemplating future pregnancies are advised to postpone a tummy tuck.

A tummy tuck can’t fix stretch marks, but these might be eliminated or marginally improved if they’re on the fields of extra skin which will be removed.

Tummy Tuck Results

Following a tummy tuck, the outcome is permanent and long-lasting. Your abdominal wall will probably be more stable and stronger. The extra skin that is removed will not return unless there is stretching that occurs outside of the region due to pregnancy.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

When you wake up after a tummy tuck, you will notice your incision will be covered in a surgical dressing. Your plastic surgeon will also provide you with a “belly binder,” also known as a compression garment. This compression garment should be worn for 6 weeks following your tummy tuck to avoid fluid build up and to help you heal properly.

In addition to your post-care regimen, you will likely be prescribed prescription painkillers and antibiotics that will help alleviate any distress and lower your chance of infection.

Depending on the surgical approach, surgical drains may also be in place under the skin for up to fourteen days following your tummy tuck surgery.

During recovery time following your tummy tuck, you should try to avoid any movement that can cause abdominal expansion or bending backward, which might pull or put an excessive amount of strain on the incision.

You should also avoid any strenuous physical activity or workouts until you get your surgeon’s approval.
