Winter Skincare Tips
Every year we winterize everything we frequently use. We put new tires on our cars, make sure the drafts aren’t coming through the chimney, and bring out the warm sweaters and cute winter boots. Unfortunately, we almost always forget to winterize and protect our skin, the body’s largest organ and certainly the most visible.
If you suffered through this sizzling summer like I did, you were applying sun block constantly and running to the nearest air-conditioned structure you could find. As winter approaches most people start to wonder why their pores are more visible and their skin overall isn’t looking its best. All you have to do is think back to the record-breaking number of 90-degree days and have your answer.
It’s an easy fix to have your skin looking better than ever in no time. Winter is actually the best time to start fresh with a skincare regimen and reverse the visible signs of aging as well. There is no reason you can’t look your best in no time, and CPS offers their winter skincare tips to help you do just that!
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
The colder weather strips skin of its natural moisture, making it even more important to moisturize consistently. The appearance of dry, cracked skin is one we all want to avoid. Find an “ointment” moisturizer that’s oil-based, rather than water-based, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion. Recommended products: SkinMedica Dermal Repair Cream, NIA Body Repair Cream, TNS Eye Repair, intense hydration for the eyes
Use sunscreen daily
Sunscreen should be applied 365 days a year. Even though the colder months won’t supply you with the sun-kissed look you would see in August, that doesn’t mean UV damage doesn’t occur in the colder months. These damaging rays are just as strong in the winter as they are in the summer. Remember to apply at least 30 minutes before leaving your house. Recommended products: Obagi Sun Shield SPF 50, with 10.5% zinc
Exfoliate
Exfoliation is very important, especially during the colder seasons. Over time dry skin cells build up on our skin leading to breakouts and blemishes, large pores, hyperpigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles. People tend to apply and reapply moisturizer and wonder why their skin is still dry. The reason is that the skin cells are clogged and aren’t able to absorb this moisture or any other product you are using. Exfoliation removes the layer of dry, dead skin and allows new skin cells to appear and with that healthy, glowing skin. Recommended products: Theraderm Fruit Acid Exfoliant
Four Key Steps For An Anti-Aging Skincare Regimen
1. Use a lactic acid exfoliant during the winter months. The exfoliant removes the dead skin cells and forces your skin to generate new cells daily, while helping moisture bind to your skin. Lactic acid is a colorless, organic acid compound derived from milk sugars and helps to exfoliate and improve the appearance of the skin. Although lactic acid is found to be fairly gentle on the skin, it is aggressive enough to see and feel results with use. Lactic acid has extremely hydrating properties, therefore is commonly found in products such as moisturizers. Recommended product: Fruit Acid Exfoliant
2. As we age our skin loses its elasticity and oxidation. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals. In turn, these radicals can start chain reactions. When the chain reaction occurs in a cell, it can cause damage or death to the cell. Use products that have vitamins C & E work to neutralize the free radicals and promote elasticity in the skin. Recommended product: Vitamin C + E Complex
3. Use a retinol product in your skincare regimen as well. Retinol promotes cellular regeneration, making skin look more youthful. Retinol is an antioxidant, and thus can interrupt the free-radical damage process that causes skin to look and act older. This action helps prevent wrinkling and increases collagen production. Retinol is effective at managing acne and eczema, as well as improving discolorations and wrinkles from sun damage. Recommended product: Tri-Retinol Complex
4. As you age, the collagen in your skin also depletes. Growth factors were originally invented to assist in regenerating tissue for severe burn victims. Researchers have found that skincare products that include growth factors not only help scarring but also collagen depletion and ultimately visible signs of aging. Recommended product: TNS Recovery Complex
