Medical History

Board Certification

According to the American Board of Medical Specialties, medical specialty certification is voluntary.

A physician’s medical licensure demonstrates minimal competency in medical care and is not specialty specific. Board certification through the ABMS, however, demonstrates a physician’s exceptional expertise in a particular specialty and/or subspecialty of medical practice.

There are other medical boards that claim to provide board certification to physicians; however, the requirements, testing and maintenance of credentials may not be as rigorous as the ABMS. Be sure to check the credentials of any surgeon you are considering, and make sure that he or she is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
